Model airplanes and aviation have been an important part of my life for almost fifty years. When we were about 11 years of age, a classmate and good friend of mine was building model airplanes. This got me interested, and I began building model airplanes. My first models were the 10 cent Comet stick and tissue models. From these we went to the 25 cent and 50 cent Comet kits, and then to other models. Then we learned about controline models, and these became our main hobby interest during our high school years; together with some free flight activity.
After high school came college, the U. S. Air Force, aircraft mechanic school, and jobs as a mechanic and an aviation fuels technician. During these years our model building activity slowed down a lot. We kept up with the hobby thru model magazine subscriptions, model books, and occasionally building a model. We became interested in plastic model airplanes and built a few. We accumulated several hundred with the intention of building them later on. These plastic models we are now selling on eBay to help fund my current aviation activities.
A few years ago, we learned about the FAC(Flying Aces Club) and its newsletter. Through this newsletter we were reacquainted with the simple to build and fun to fly model airplanes of our youth. During our absence from active model building and flying; the hobby has become very complex, very competitive, and very expensive. As we enter into our retirement; this complexity, intense competition, and high cost hold little interest for me. So these simple and enjoyable models of my youth have once again become my favorites. And for me, an important and favorite model are the flying wings and other tailless aircraft forms.
